14 Jun: Fast Food Kiosks: Their Impact in 2019

Think about the last time you walked into a McDonald’s or Panera Bread. Did you order through a cashier, or did you opt to skip the line and order through the digital payment kiosk? Chances are if you did the latter, you had a smooth encounter and didn’t have to worry about being sold on the latest espresso drink or newest soup and sandwich combo. Although fast food kiosks haven’t yet shown up in many fast food chains throughout the country, you may begin to see them popping up in the next couple of years. So what exactly is an unattended payment kiosk? Pretty much as the name says, the technology doesn’t need a human cashier to take your card, swipe, ask you to insert a PIN or give you a…

28 May: Chip Card Readers in 2019: Everything You Need to Know

By now, you’re used to the magnetic stripe on the back of your credit cards. You might even still use it from time to time. However, the use of strips on cards is becoming less common. For nearly five years now, credit card companies have been making the switch from magnetic stripe to chip cards. Why the change? Data security. With so many different forms of payments nowadays, it’s hard to keep track of all your cards and digital wallets and payment apps, and fraudsters abound. Luckily, the chip card uses encrypted data to keep your bank information safe when paying with credit cards. Each time you make a payment, the POS terminal will prompt you to insert your card. The chip card reader gathers the data internally, rather than through…

26 Apr: Point of Sale Hardware in 2019: 5 Big Developments

With the rise of digital payments and increasing use of credit cards, merchants must keep up with payment trends. When customers sense that their preferred methods of payments are being met, they will be more likely to revisit stores and talk positively about the company. With cash, credit cards and contactless payments all working as viable payments options, it’s important to have a point of sale hardware system that allows your customers to pay whichever way is easiest for them. As of 2017, 44 percent of consumers preferred debit cards as their main payment method and the next most common method was credit cards at 33 percent. Additionally, about 10% loaded a credit card to a mobile wallet and 9% loaded debit card to a mobile wallet for digital payments. The…

19 Mar: PIN on Glass: 4 Secret Things You Need to Know

Businesses have more options for points of sale than ever before. Because of this, it is important to understand which payment types will work best for your company and how they differ. PIN on Glass, one of the latest emerging technologies for transactions, eliminates the cost and space needed for outdated, hefty hardware. Instead of using standalone kiosks or terminals for point of sale, businesses can download software onto tablets that are equipped with EMV readers that transfer PINs directly to the smart device’s screen. The 2018 Federal Reserve Payment Study found that from 2016 to 2017, credit card payments increased by 10.1 percent by number and 8.4 percent by value. Additionally, there was an ATM cash withdrawal decline by 2.8% that could be connected to the increase in credit card…

12 Mar: EMV Compliance: What You Need to Know

What is EMV? EMV® technology was developed and managed by American Express, Discover, JCB, Mastercard, UnionPay, and Visa. It is a global standard for credit cards that use computer chips to authenticate chip-card transactions. EMV chips encrypt bank information making it far more secure than the old magnetic-stripe cards. EMV technology was created primarily to prevent credit card fraud. When counterfeit or lost and stolen fraud does occur, cardholders may lose trust in their card product, their bank, and in the merchant where the fraud occurred. In most cases, the issuer will have to close the account and in doing so may risk losing cardholder accounts. A merchant can lose revenue associated with the fraudulent purchase and possibly future business from the cardholder. EMV cards are smart cards (also called chip…
